  • Is it protocol for the cop to BEGIN by asking someone to step out of their own home without telling them why? I guess the police are used to burglars opening the door when the police arrive.

  • The officer would have been doing his job correctly if he had gone to the door, and upon finding someone opening the door, said "Sir, we have a report of break in at this residence, do you live here?", and then based on his response either asked him to step outside or kindly ask him for ID.

  • What was the first thing the cop said? I don't think he FIRST asked him for identification, I think he FIRST asked him to step out of his own home without saying anything about why he was there. This is a critical point to the whole story, and is the basis for Prof. Gates angry.

  • It appears the RELEVANT facts have been established... 1. Prof Gates did not assault the Officer 2. Prof Gates was arrested in his own home for something he has a right to do What other facts are RELEVANT???? What other facts do we need to know???

  • My first inclination was to think that Prof. Gates overreacted, and that the problem was clearly caused by him not reacting the way he should have. However, after some reflection on it and reading was has been reported about what happened, I have come to be more supportive of Prof.
